Dr. Hinkle is the Founder and President of Complex2Simple, Inc. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the AVS (Science and Technology of Materials, Interfaces, and Processing).

After receiving a Ph.D. in physics from Pennsylvania State University in 1989, Dr. Hinkle joined MKS Instruments as the Technology Manager and later became the Product Marketing Director. In his technology role at MKS, he led the development and implementation of strategic technology roadmaps across all corporate divisions, initiated the invention and patent program, and developed advanced product concepts. Of his six patents, four are presently used in pressure and flow products with combined sales approaching $100 million annually. In his marketing role, he led the pressure measurement and control product teams in business planning, product management, applications engineering, sales training, and contract negotiations.

In addition to his demonstrated expertise in technology and marketing, Dr. Hinkle has a considerable repertoire of educational and training capabilities. Spanning audiences from senior scientists to elementary school students, he finds a way to connect and effectively present the message. He developed the AVS Mass Flow Controller course and has been teaching and revising it for over 15 years. Dr. Hinkle further broadened his communication skills by teaching advanced math and science for five years at Falmouth High School in Falmouth Massachusetts. All the while, he has continued active research and publishing in various pressure and flow topics and has served on the editorial board for the Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology and on various technical, marketing, and education committees for the AVS. He coauthors a monthly column "Vacuum Corner" and authors a monthly feature article "Guides to Vacuum Technology" in the magazine Vacuum Technology and Coating.
